Ancient Sri Lanka: Anuradapura & Mihinthale

Anuradapura was Sri Lanka's first capital and was the main metropolis of the country for 1000 years.  Today, ancient ruins dot this city, also up till recently the forward base in the war against the Tamil Tigers.  Military installations are found everywhere.

Mihinthale was where Buddhism was adopted in Sri Lanka 2200 years ago, when Mahinda, son of Emperor Asoka of India, converted the Sri Lankan king Devanampiyatissa.
