Singapore & Drugs

A crisis is threatening Australian-Singapore relations.  The BBC website asks for public views on this matter, and I contributed my 2 cents worth:

Death penalty for drugs trafficking receives enormous support from Singaporeans in general.  We Singaporeans have great pride in our safe streets, drugs-free environment and law and order, and there is general consensus that our strict laws have contributed to such a society.  Although many Singaporeans  sympathise with the sadness of a mother about to loose her son, most of us would agree that we cannot sacrifice the integrity of our laws to which we owe our security, peace and prosperity.  We have never made any concession on our drug laws, whether the death penalty is applied on our own citizens or on any other nationality; and therefore we cannot make any concession today.  We hope our dear Australian friends would understand this.
