Suriname¡¯s Telephone Coup of 1990

Have you heard of the telephone coup?  In the 1980s, Suriname was controlled by a military strongman named Desi Bouterse, who ruled through a series of governments that he appointed and dismissed at will.  In 1987, a less friendly coalition government was elected and in 1990, when disagreements rose between him and this government, he rang the president to announce a coup and dismiss the government.  This became known as the ¡°Telephone Coup¡±.
