After the collapse of Meroe Empire, it split into smaller states which became Christian. The region later became Muslim in the 7th century, with the Arab conquest. During its Christian period, the Nubian Church, which was linked to the Egyptian Coptic Church produced many great pieces of art, which can be found at the National Museum.
