Beirut now, staying at Talal's New Hotel in downtown. Very bustling, modern city. Huge sea reclamation project ongoing and lots of huge skyscrapers and malls being built despite the political instability. Passed a number of soldiers and tanks guarding important points, as well as destroyed buildings but not sure whether these were the result of the 1970s-80s civil war, Israeli invasion of 2006 or the recent fighting between government or the opposition.
Many people speak English and they all dress very well and seemed sophisticated. A country in sharp contrast.
