The Maronite Christians, after the defeat of the Crusaders, retreated to these remote mountains where they could defend themselves against the Muslim lowlanders. Here, religious men also built monasteries where they lived secluded lives mediating and contemplating God. Today, the valley and its monasteries have become a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
