This festival commemorates Xian-Fu-Ren 冼夫人, a 6th century AD tribal military leader allied with the Tang Dynasty and helped pacified and ruled southern China. Apparently, she has also become a local deity and processions in which there are tankis and spikes similar to those among the Southeast Asian diaspora.
