This was a Chinese leader named Kwok Liu Kwan (郭六官) who fought the Dutch during the terrible massacre of 1740 in which more than 10,000 Chinese were slaughtered. Kwok eventually disappeared and was believed to have been drowned during the chaos. Later, his spirit was seen saving seamen and traders in rough seas and thunderstorms, and accordingly became a god to many Chinese-Indonesians who built temples to worship him. |
