Tainan, the "Mother City" of Taiwan

Tainan, today a sleepy city, was the first capital of Taiwan and home to many historical sites and sacred temples.  It was initially capital of the Dutch colony of Formosa then the capital of the Ming-Zheng state founded by Ming patriot, Zheng Chenggong (known as Koxinga to the West).  Today, Tainan is also where the pro-independence movement receives the greatest support.

"Today, it is also the political hotbed for Taiwanese nationalism."

That's an interesting way to put it :)
