My Tiananmen

Tiananmen happened a year after I visited China for the first time, on a family vacation that also saw the emotive reunion of Dad with his long-separated brother in China. I was in NS as tanks rolled across Chang'an Avenue. My heart broke as I recalled the fresh smell of flowers in the small parks and hutong, and the heavenly aroma of fried dumplings of Hangzhou.

The students of Peking U were only a year or two older than me and I sympathised with their cause then. Today, my feelings are more mixed. Would the miracle of China today occurred if the students had succeeded? We would never know and history would debate this forever...
