A Matter of Perspective

What do you think of these Haitian Naiive Paintings?
Naive paintings are generally defined as those produced by self taught artists, or those who are not trained in formal, classical academic methods. Some call it primitive art, folk art or peasant art. There are a number of naiive art forms in the world which are famous, among them the Haitian school and the Jingshan peasant art of Shanghai. I love them for their simplicity, bold messages and bright colours.
When I showed them to a friend in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands, he said these were not art, but children's scribblings.
It's a matter of perspective (oops, am I quoting from those famous HSBC ads?).
