Back in Mohe, on to Daqing on Overnight Train tonight. Mohe was burnt to the ground in the disastrous great fire of 1987 but has since been rebuilt in a rather bizarre grandoise Russian architectural style. The buildings here are enormous and many have neoclassical facades of a certain style one finds in St Petersburg. Imagine this - Russian buildings and motifs but signboards are all Chinese. This part of China is sparsely populated and there are few people on the streets...this made Mohe resemble a typical medium sized Siberian city...not surprising as Siberia is a stone's throw away.
